The Beverly Hospital Breast Health Center offers family history review and pre-test counseling for women concerned about their inherited cancer susceptibility. The Center also provides genetic testing for women who choose to pursue this information. This comprehensive and coordinated services is readily available in our community through our collaboration with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center’s (BIDMC) Cancer Risk Evaluation Program.
Our nurse practitioner is specially trained to determine, through comprehensive family history review and personal health history, a woman’s specific risk of carrying the BRCA 1 or BRCA 2 genetic mutation, which has been linked to a higher risk for breast cancer. Risk benefit counseling is offered to women regarding any decision to pursue further genetic testing, ensuring the woman has sufficient information with which to make an informed decision. Patients with positive or indeterminate results for the BRCA 1 or BRCA 2 genetic mutation are referred for further counseling to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. Follow up care can be arranged at either BIDMC or Beverly Hospital.
